2010 A Quality Product Team Capsule |
|
| 16th PLACE - 28.0 PTS - |
After a rocky inaugural season, A Quality Product entered the 2010 season with hopes of building on their initial effort and at least reaching the middle of the HCBB standings – but their sophomore campaign would end up as a greatly disappointing follow-up. Owners Jose Mejia and Alton Adams had been relatively quiet in their 1st season, but they made an off-season splash going into their 2nd, adding B. J Upton ($29) to go with returning stud third baseman Alex Rodriguez ($41) as a start to building their offense. But their draft days plans took a number of turns for the worse, as heavy investments in Brian Roberts ($29), Michael Cuddyer ($29), and Raul Ibanez ($29) would result in mediocre performances and stints on the DL. But while the team’s offense would be nothing to write home about, AQP’s pitching staff in the Year of the Pitcher would be cringe-worthy, as the franchise would record an HCBB all-time low of only 6 pitching points, finishing last in every category other than saves. Despite a stellar year from HCBB Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright, the remainder of the AQP staff would be a catastrophe, as Jair Jurrgens (a 4.77 ERA in 111 IP), Kevin Millwood (a 5.80 ERA in 107 IP), and Jeff Francis (a 6.20 ERA in 74 IP) would deliver one debacle after another on the mound for the beleaguered team. AQP would never be higher than 10th place at the end of any period during the year, and by the middle of June, they’d gained a foothold on the cellar, where they would remain until the end of the season, garnering the franchise’s first plunger. |

| TEAM MVP - B.J. UPTON |
Acquired
from Roll The Bones in an off-season trade, Tampa
Bay outfielder B. J. Upton would be one of the few bright
spots for A Quality Product in what was otherwise
a disappointing year for the team. Even though Upton would
be a batting average drain for the franchise, hitting only
.237 on the year, he would deliver outstanding numbers
in other categories, making him one of the team’s
few offensive weapons. Upton’s primary contribution
would be his speed, as he swiped a team-leading 42 bases,
while also adding some power, tying for the team lead with
18 HR. Upton would also add in 89 runs (good for 2nd-best
on the squad), making him a valuable multi-category contributor
for AQP in 2010. |

| TEAM RO-SHAM-BO - BRIAN ROBERTS |
With the middle infield position looking weaker than it ever had in recent years, there were left few quality options for teams to choose from entering the draft in 2010, but that didn’t make A Quality Product’s risky selection of Brian Roberts any less of a bad gamble – and it would be one that would leave the franchise with a gaping hole at the position by the season’s end. Roberts had struggled with a herniated disc in his back during spring training, but AQP dropped $29 on him anyway. They would get only 14 at-bats from him before Roberts would land on the DL with an abdominal strain. The O’s second baseman wouldn’t return until July, and he would end the year with a mere 118 at-bats and 7 SB – numbers that made him a waste of money for a franchise that could ill afford it.
Going all-in on Brian Roberts was a bad gamble for AQP in 2010, one that contributed to a plunger.

| OUTLOOK FOR 2011 |
Unfortunately
for A Quality Product, the franchise’s
second season would be its last, as other commitments
would force owners Mejia and Adams to relinquish their
HCBB membership following the 2010 season, marking
only the 2nd time in league history that a plunger-winning
team failed to return for the following year (joining
the 1999 Gashouse Gorillas). But replacing
them would be two new teams: Willard’s Flapjack
Emporium, headed by owners Matt Wheelahan and
Travis Campo, and Lucan the Wolf Boy headed
by Douglas Mouton and former Joe’s Jarheads owner
Joe Frisard, who will be making a triumph return after
an absence of more than decade. The history for expansion
teams is bleak, with the 12th place finish by the Tazmanian
Devils in 2009 representing the best finish by
a new franchise since the turn of the century – but
both franchises look to avoid the mistakes of previous
squads and begin building a winning foundation in 2011.
